If you are looking for a new dentist to seek treatment from, you have probably come across a variety of terms – like “general dentistry” and “cosmetic dentistry,” but what exactly does this mean? Do dentists in these disciplines provide completely different services or is there some overlap? Continue reading to learn more about these different areas of dentistry and how to choose the right dental professional to help you achieve your goals.
How Does General and Cosmetic Dentistry Work?
General dentists and cosmetic dentists have their focus on different dental facets. Here’s what each one consists of:
General Dentistry
General dentists usually spend their time addressing dental issues that are associated with oral hygiene, discomfort, or pain. For instance, a general dentist would perform routine dental exams and address issues that come up along the way. This could be through dental fillings, placing dental crowns, root canal treatment, and more. General dentists are also able to perform a limited range of cosmetic procedures, like direct bonding and teeth whitening.
Cosmetic Dentistry
A cosmetic dentist has all the knowledge of a general dentist, but they have more of a focus on the aesthetic aspects of teeth. A cosmetic dentist is likely to undergo more additional training in cosmetic treatments and procedures. This gives them the knowledge and skills to be better able to provide more complex services, such as veneers, orthodontics, and/or smile makeovers.
Which Type of Dentist Should You Choose?
There are many differences between general and cosmetic dentists, but there is also quite a bit of overlap because there isn’t a well-defined line between the two areas of dentistry. If a patient has a broken tooth, it needs to be repaired to prevent additional damage, but it’s also important that the final outcome looks great and complements the rest of their oral structure. No one wants to feel self-conscious while showing off their smile.
Everyone has different factors that are important to them when choosing a dentist. If you are simply looking for routine cleanings and checkups or minor restorative work, a general dentist can be a great option. However, if you also want to focus on the appearance of your smile to boost your confidence, it is strategic to choose a cosmetic dentist who has completed advanced training in aesthetic dentistry.
When choosing a dentist, there are many different things to take into consideration. If you have cosmetic goals that you are working towards, you may want to see a cosmetic dentist to help you achieve them. This way, you can work together to assemble a plan that’s right for you!
